The first Mercedes was a Maybach. Because as a worker at Gottlieb Daimler's DMG (Daimler Motor Company) Wilhelm Maybach constructed the first car which had the name Mercedes.The creator of the Maybach automobiles however was no longer Wilhelm Maybach but his son Dr. Karl Maybach.He founded in 1910 in Friedrichshafen at the Lake of Constance the Firm Maybach Motor Company.The Firm initially produced the engines for air ships of the Graf Zeppelin and plane motors.At the end of WW I the production had to be changed to the production of vehicle motors.Later Maybach decided to produce complete chassis.Maybach did not produce its own bodies, but obtained these mostly from Spohn in Ravensburg.After a series of various models, Maybach finally built the 12-cylinder Maybach Zeppelin.A huge car, the top model of which reached through a capacity of 8 liters the at that time unheard of achievement of 200 hp and had a 7 gear transmission.The Zeppelin was so big and heavy that the driver actually had to possess a truck driver's license.Because however the Maybach Zeppelin were almost all operated by chauffeurs, this was actually not disturbing.The hard suspension due to the weight was however.In 1936 Maybach presented the Model SW 38 offered here.The SW 38 offered exceptional suspension comfort, high travel speeds and was also designed for drivers without a truck driver's license.The driving achievements were at that time only reached by few sport or compressor cars.Like Rolls-Royce in England Maybachs represented the absolute top automobiles in Germany in quality and price and made the brand a legend.It is very seldom that one of the few Maybachs are for sale.The SW 38 Cabriolet offered here was delivered in 1936 in Germany.The 4 + 2-seat body was produced by Spohn in Ravensburg.The rear passengers enjoy the most spacious seating conditions.When needed, there are two emergency seats available, thus the label 4+2.
